System Details
This solar panel and battery storage system were installed at a house in Wilmslow, Cheshire. The house roof wasn’t suitable to have solar panels installed on it, so the customer chose to have the solar panels installed on their slate garage roof. The roof faced south and was ideal for a solar installation, and as it was supplied by power from the house, we were able to use the existing power cable to transmit the power from the garage back to the house.
Although there were a number of large trees to the west of the garage, they didn’t cast any shade on the roof until later in the day. As we wanted the panels to work for as much of the day as possible, we chose to use Enphase micro-inverters, as these clever devices are fitted to individual panels and so when a panel is put into shade, only one panel’s power output is reduced, whilst the other panels continue to operate normally.
Our customer would have liked to install the solar panels in the roof, but as the slate roof was quite new this didn’t make sense, so instead we fitted Solar Skirt around the solar panels to achieve a sleek look which is similar to an in-roof installation.
We fitted fifteen 440 Watt JA Solar all black solar panels in three rows of five panels and this installation will produce 6500kWh in a typical year.
We also installed a 5kW Enphase IQ 5P battery storage system inside the garage which will store excess energy during the day for the customer to use in the evenings. The battery can also be charged on a timed basis, so this customer will charge the battery at night on a cheaper off-peak rate and then use the stored energy in the mornings to reduce their consumption of more expensive peak rate electricity. Typically, by using the 5kW of battery storage to benefit from the night rate tariffs, you can save around £350 per year and if you then use the battery to store excess solar energy, you are doubling the benefit of the battery storage system.
