We recently were contacted by a lady in Sutton, near Macclesfield who wanted to install solar panels on her bungalow roof at the same time as having her bungalow re-roofed as the concrete tiles were starting to fail.
It is the perfect time to install solar panels when you are having your roof repaired as it helps to reduce the installation costs for both the roof repairs and the solar panel installation.
As it is normally necessary to provide scaffolding for a re-roofing job and a solar panel installation, by carrying out both jobs at the same time you will save money on the scaffolding costs.
Also as the solar panels can be integrated into the roof in place of concrete tiles, slates and rosemary tiles, it is not necessary to buy as many replacement tiles or slates and in some cases, the cost of the solar panels is less than the cost of the roofing materials that they are replacing.
This bungalow in Sutton had a South facing roof so it was perfect for an in-roof solar panel installation. Once the roofers had removed the original roof tiles and replaced the old roof felt with a modern roof membrane, we worked with them to fit the battens that hold the new membrane in place, as they need to be in a specific layout for the GSE in-roof solar panel mounting trays that we were using on this bungalow for it’s in-roof solar panel installation.
Once the GSE in-roof trays had been installed, we left the roofers to complete the replacement of the concrete tiles before we installed the Aiko 455 Watt All Black Bi-facial solar panels across the roof.
As the roof was being replaced at the same time as the solar panels were being installed in order to allow us to fit the in-roof solar panels, we sub-contracted the roofers to carry out the work on our behalf. The cost of the roofing work was less than the cost of the solar panel installation and although the roofers charged us VAT on their work, as solar panel installations are exempt from VAT, the re-roofing work that was carried out as part of the solar panel installation was also exempt from VAT, as it was part of our work and this saved our customer money on the re-roofing work.
The attractive in-roof solar panels are guaranteed for 25 years and have a 30 year performance guarantee. The solar panels were connected to Enphase micro-inverters which are mounted behind each solar panel in the in-roof trays. The Enphase micro-inverters work perfectly with the GSE in-roof system and they are also guaranteed for 25 years. The Enphase micro-inverters are fully waterproofed and have no moving parts and as they are situated behind the panels, no space is required in the house for a larger string inverter.
This system has nine Aiko 455 Watt all black solar panels which are connected to the Enphase micro-inverters which are expected to produce 3615kWh of green electricity over a typical year.
